Deep hip pain? where does it come from?
That annoying deep hip pain- that isn’t quite the back, not quite the SI joint, not quite the hip- It just aches, there is no rhyme or reason. X rays are fine, maybe show some arthritis; maybe you have had a MRI which shows glut med tendinopathy or a bulging disc or a hip labral tear. Either way, you aren’t interested in surgery and have tried a cortisone injection. Now what?

What do we assess?
Even though we are pelvic floor physical therapists, we look at spine and hip alignment and mobility, we also check how you move. How do you sit for work? How do you carry your kids? Do you exercise? Let me see you squat and jog.
There are special deep deep hip rotators that connect the hip to the pelvic floor, we will check those guys out too- these are usually tight and can limit hip mobility. We can check these internally or externally. So if you are worried about an internal exam, fear not!
How do we treat?
We improve your mobility, almost always there is a deficit in hip internal or external rotation- so we make sure your muscles allow for that movement!
We improve stability and control- great you have good range of motion, but can you move with control- example: most people can squat, but can you squat well with good thigh over knee alignment- what is your back doing? do you have a butt wink? or are you popping your ribs?
How is posture? standing posture, exercise posture, all of that contributes to that pesky pain
Finally we all have tendencies- for example, if you have a desk job you do hav a tendency to hunch forward. If you are right handed, you will always carry your child on your left hip so you can use your right hand. We aren’t robots, we are human, and imperfect, and that’s okay. I have no problem with you doing those things, but we may teach you exercises to compensate for those to help rebalance your system.
Home exercise programs are given every visit, constantly being tailored and retailored as your needs change. Maybe we gave you glut strengthening on all 4’s, but you prefer standing? we change it up. Or you are traveling so you need exercsies without equipment? we got you. Its a relationship!
